Woodland Clearances – They’ve Started At Last!

Yes, today (Tuesday 23rd. February) saw the contractors move on to site and begin the long awaited felling and clearances.
They started on Kellie Road and will be moving next (we understand) into the woods adjacent to Middlemas Road and John Muir Crescent.

Watch this space for updates.

    STOP WORRYING ABOUT THE WOODS
Despite holding 2 public meetings and distributing 3 newsletters giving PLENTY warning that 40% of trees would go, only now are some people beginning to notice.
Please be assured that all experts involved in the project – that’s Simon Bell, committee member who drewup the management plan in 2000, Mark Page, DCWG’s appointed forestry consultant and Tom Hobbs our forestry commission officer are all EXTREMELY HAPPY with progress, The birds are not ready to nest yet, they’ll be fine. The showdrops will grow back, and the tree crowns will grow thicker and the trees stronger.

40% left might be a closer statement. What a mess these woods are now. Yes it will be better in the long run but for the next few years they will not be as nice to walk in as they used to be. I also have to point out that the man in charge of the workmen is very rude and comes across that its just one big joke to him. My opinion of the woodland group now is that you are just a bunch of do gooders not willing to listen to the masses of people who think this idea is silly. I have not talked to anyone yet that thinks this is a good idea apart from woodland group members. And what do we get told when we voice our objection……Nothing you can do about it…..! Pathetic ! many thanks for ruining our woods.

I agree that the clearances have changed the woodlands dramatically. It does make me a bit sad to see all those trees go but I have to have faith in the experts that this is for the best. For all the angry people complaining that ‘their’ woodland has be ruined – where were you when ‘your’ woodland needed cleaning up? when meetings were held about the future of the woodland? when work needed to be done to keep it safe?

I applaud the woodland group that work so hard to make the woodlands better for us. Where would we be without volunteers like this?

Iagree with grumpy comparing the quality of the felling to that in other woodland areas around gt britain this is a mess! I visited the woods 0n11th mar I was devastated it resembles the aftermath of a war zone! Yes this may sound a little extreme but nevertheless its how it felt as I tried to negotiate my way around the woods. Ishould add that I am disabled and so the blocking of pathways with large branches, exposed roots etc made my journey impossable. I have a respect for nature and what we should be doing to ensure that its safe for future generations. My complaint at this point is the quality of the work and how the woods have been left, it is really very sad. Yet another loss to the people of Dunbar who dont have a car to access woodland walks.

I did actually go along to help with my daughter the other Sunday and cleared branches from what is left of the path.We were told that the felling company are not going to do any of the clearing of the smaller logs and branches.I can’t help think that this is an impossible task to be done on a voluntary basis. It would take a full time team ,with a truck to dispose of it all ,at least a week just to clear opposite Kellie Place. Where can all those branches go? Also, are they not Scotch Pines that have been chopped down in the main wood section?

on behalf of those less able thanks to Jamie & his daughter. I was back there today, with the best will in the world the level of debris left by this felling company would make it extremely difficult for a group of volunteers to clear and make safe the existing paths. I feel for those who opted for a company who clearly were not up to the job however its what happens now thats important. Is there no room for negotiation with this company? The concept of clearing up after a job of work does not apply here?
